Choosing the correct kit for arduous events is always a mixed bag. Part of me loves the shiny new gear and half of me hates the decision making (and a part of me hates paying out the money), but choosing the kit for the Ice Ultra in Sweden is especially challenging because the consequences of getting it wrong are so high.

Even though I had spent nearly 3 years of accumulative time in the Arctic circle during my time in the Royal Marines, I still thought long and hard about what kit I should take.

As with all these events, weight and size is an important factor as is thermal and windproof properties. I have to say that on the whole, my decisions were great. Apart from looking more like a fisherman than an ultra runner, I was 100% happy with all my gear apart from my water bottles a little too tall and my boxers shorts…
